The present Ayushman team has been together for over 2 decades and is committed to provide surgical excellence and best patient outcome.

The Ayushman team founded the department of Minimal Access Surgery led by Dr. Pradeep Chowbey at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi in 1996. This department was the first of its kind in the Asian subcontinent and worked with singular determination to develop, evaluate and propagate minimal access (laparoscopic surgery) in India. One of the foremost stated objectives of the department was to train, teach and introduce surgeons to the art and safe practice of laparoscopic surgery. The department has been host to many international and national surgeons who visited to avail of several fellowships and related training programs in laparoscopic surgery.

After having achieved remarkable success in developing and popularizing techniques for safe Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) the team subsequently standardized techniques for Minimal Access hernia repair that were recognized on a global scale. A large majority of abdominal operations subsequently started falling within the purview of Minimal Access surgery. Another important globally recognized contribution from the team was Minimal Access (Endoscopic) approach for Thyroid / Parathyroid surgery.

The Ayushman team advanced the concept of specialized teams to exclusively practice, propagate and develop Minimal Access techniques in surgery. The team was amongst the first to recognize the requirement and importance of Bariatric Surgery in the country. Bariatric surgical services were offered to patients from the turn of last century.

The Ayushman team relocated to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi in 2009 to set up the Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
